SENIOR PROJECT OVERVIEW
Name: Miles Coutts
Title of Project: DAV Donation Drive
Title of Research Paper: Helping the Veterans Benefits System
Synopsis of Research Paper: This paper describes what the DAV and the VA are and how these two agencies help the veteran’s benefits system. The comparison of the two G.I. BILLs which are the post 9/11 Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 and the Montgomery G.I. Bill will show how the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 was amended post 9/11. The Montgomery G.I. Bill was a new version of the G.I. Bill that created the transfer of benefits and improved veterans accessibility to job training after being discharged from the armed forces. There are two reasons why the benefits of veterans must be improved; one is to take care of those who have fought for our country, and two is to encourage all Americans to join the military knowing they will have outstanding benefits that come with retirement. This paper will highlight the importance of the VA system properly working and explain the new and improved Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944. Clarifying these details will prove that system should help current and future veterans.
Project Description: My project was a donation drive for the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) thrift store, whose profits help the DAV help veterans. I gave a speech on how the DAV picks up where the Veterans Administration left off. Plus, the DAV helps all veterans with any problem they have for example if they need help with their VA benefits forms the DAV will help them out.
Relationship between Project and Paper: The DAV is a huge part of many veterans’ lives. This is because when the VA can’t help the DAV steps in to help. This is evident through the fact that some veterans are committing suicide because the VA can’t help them in time. The DAV has facilities where if you need help of any kind they will make sure that you get that help before you leave.
My background experience in the area: My neighborhood is full of veterans who love to talk about their military career. Once I started talking to them I realized that the VA is not helping those who need to be helped.
Special things I’d like judges to consider and look for: I plan on becoming a Naval Jag Officer in the future so I would like to know that I am going to be taken care of when I retire from the military.
